What is Balayage? Is it right for me?

Balayage colouring is one of our most requested colour services at Simon Paul Hair – here’s everything you need to know about this popular style.

What is Balayage?

Created in the 1970’s, Balayage is a French freehand colouring technique where the colour is applied by hand rather than using the traditional foiling approach. For the best results, hair below the shoulders is the perfect length, although it can work just as well with shorter lengths. Balayage could be considered a low maintenance style. Clients want to feel fashionable and look great, and for most styles it is difficult to retain that salon look, or commit to a touch up every few weeks. This makes Balayage a very appealing style.

Another benefit with Balayage, is that it doesn’t have a solid colour line so if you have an extended period between appointments, you will find that it is far less noticeable than other colouring techniques. It is important that a Balayage is carried out by an experienced stylist, if not, you may end up with extensive overlapping that can ultimately damage your hair.

How is it applied?

Balayage is usually built up over a number of appointments, and the process varies based on the desired result. Hair is separated into sections with the ends coloured with a freehand technique, it is this painting and sweeping motion of applying the colour that the french word, Balayage, is derived from. This freehand technique is what gives the style the much loved natural appearance.

Is it right for me?

Balayage works best with untreated hair, but with the style being so versatile, it can be applied to most hair types.

I've been a happy customer of Simon Paul Hair for the past 5 years. The service I receive weekly from the in-salon Barber Ed, never disappoints, anything from a general cut, wet shave or beard trim, Ed always delivers.

Ed, the barber within Simon Paul, never fails to deliver a great tidy haircut and wet shave. He has also recommended different styles over the past couple of years, mixing up my haircuts a little. Always leave happy, and full of coffee!
